Midlife Career Coach in Bristol and Across the UK
You don’t need to know the answer before you begin.
Your career may look perfectly good on paper, but that doesn’t mean it still feels right for the person you are now. Midlife can change what matters, how you want to spend your time and what you need from your working life.
If you’re questioning your career, feeling stuck or wondering whether there is something different you could be doing, midlife career coaching gives you space to understand what has changed and explore what could come next without assuming that you need to throw away everything you’ve already built.
I offer midlife career coaching in Bristol and online across the UK.

Are you questioning what you want from your career now?
You might be thinking:
I can’t do this for another 15 years.
On paper I’ve got a good job, so why am I not happy?
I don’t know what I want to do instead.
I’ve completely lost my motivation.
I want to do something more meaningful.
I’ve been made redundant and I don’t know who I am anymore.
I’ve spent years looking after everybody else and I’ve forgotten what I want.
A midlife career change doesn’t always mean leaving your job. The first step is understanding what is no longer working and what you actually want more of.
Midlife can change the question
The career that fitted you at one stage of your life does not automatically have to fit forever. That doesn’t mean the earlier choice was wrong. You may simply have changed.
Children becoming more independent, caring responsibilities, menopause, redundancy, restructures, relationship changes, finances or a growing awareness that time is not infinite can all shift the way you think about work.
Career coaching gives you somewhere to explore those changes without rushing into a decision or talking yourself out of every possibility before you’ve properly considered it.
Midlife career coaching can help you explore:
Whether you genuinely want a new career or whether something within your current role needs to change
What matters to you now and whether your work still reflects those values
Your strengths, transferable skills and professional identity beyond your job title
Fear around being “too old”, starting again or making the wrong decision
Redundancy, restructures or an unexpected change in career direction
Different roles, industries or organisations that could suit you
Reduced hours, portfolio careers, retraining or starting a business
The financial and practical realities of making a change
How to research and test possibilities before committing to them
How to build confidence while you explore what comes next
The Abigail Jane Coaching® Approach is Different
We start at the roots, not the job title
Career change conversations often begin with CVs, skills and job titles. I prefer to go back a step and understand the foundations underneath them.
Explore before you decide
Your values are the roots. They are the things that genuinely matter to you and motivate you. Your strengths grow from those foundations, and your skills are the visible ways those strengths show up in your work.
Once we understand those roots, it becomes much easier to evaluate opportunities based on who you are now, rather than simply looking for another version of the job you already have.
01.
Beliefs are not facts
Midlife career change can bring up some very convincing thoughts: ‘I’m too old’, ‘nobody would employ me’, ‘I’d have to start again’ or ‘I can’t afford to earn less’. Some of those concerns may reflect genuine constraints. Others may be assumptions that have never been tested.
We look at the evidence fairly. The aim isn’t reckless change or pretending practical responsibilities don’t exist. It is to understand the parameters you are actually working within and then ask what might still be possible.
02.
Explore before you decide
You do not need to make one enormous decision immediately. Career exploration can include researching roles, speaking to people already doing work that interests you, looking at your existing network, testing assumptions and trying small experiments.
03.
Changing direction doesn’t mean throwing your experience away
One client, an experienced healthcare professional in her late 50s, was tired of her career and had completed training in aromatherapy and massage. She thought the idea of starting a business was unrealistic and expected coaching to tell her to forget it and return to the safe option.
Instead, we explored the idea in manageable steps. She began with mobile massage, moved into a room at a local therapy centre and gradually developed the business further.
An important part of the process was recognising that she did not have to choose between her old professional identity and her new direction. Her years of healthcare experience were not wasted. They became part of what she could bring with her.
Sometimes the right career change is not changing career
Another client was a high-achieving project manager who felt completely out of her depth on a technical project. She was interpreting a knowledge gap as evidence that she was no longer good enough at her job.
Through coaching, she became more open about where she needed support and explored ways to learn from colleagues. She stayed in the role and later won a company award.
That contrast matters. I don’t have a preferred outcome for you. The goal is to help you understand what is really happening so you can make a decision that feels informed and right for you.

Midlife Career Coaching FAQs
What is a midlife career coach?
A midlife career coach helps you explore what you want from your working life now, understand what may have changed and consider realistic options for what comes next. Coaching can include values, strengths, confidence, practical constraints, research and decision-making.
Am I too old to change career?
Age is one factor in a career decision, but it does not automatically mean change is unrealistic. We can look at the evidence, your experience, finances, responsibilities and the routes available to you rather than treating the first doubtful thought as a fact.
Do I need to know what career I want before starting coaching?
No. Many clients come to coaching precisely because they know something needs to change but do not yet know what they want instead. The coaching process creates space to explore before making a decision.
Will you tell me what career I should choose?
No. I may share resources, questions, labour-market knowledge and ideas to support your exploration, but I will not prescribe the answer. The goal is for you to make an informed choice that fits your values, circumstances and priorities.
What if I cannot afford to leave my current job?
We do not ignore practical realities. We can look at your actual commitments, income, savings, possible training costs and different routes to change. Sometimes leaving immediately will not be viable, but that does not mean you cannot begin exploring or planning a safer route.
Can career coaching help if I decide to stay?
Yes. Sometimes coaching helps someone realise that the problem is not the career itself. Different boundaries, support, working patterns, responsibilities or a new role within the same field may create the change they need.
Do you offer midlife career coaching online?
Yes. I offer coaching in Bristol and online across the UK.
