The 5 biggest motivation blockers; how to smash through them and increase productivity

by Abigail Jane

Finding motivation can sometimes feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Whether you're an entrepreneur, a student, or a remote worker, these motivation blockers can stand in your way. But fear not!

By identifying and understanding these blockers, you can transform them into stepping stones towards increased productivity.

In this blog post, I will guide you through the ten biggest motivation blockers and provide actionable solutions to smash through them. The main barriers to achieving goals can be broken down into these 5 areas which all impact motivation and confidence. Let's get started on this exciting journey toward a more productive and fulfilling life.

What is motivation, and why is it essential for productivity?

Motivation is the internal drive and desire to take action towards achieving a goal or fulfilling a need. It is crucial for productivity because it provides the energy and determination necessary to overcome obstacles, stay focused, and complete tasks effectively.

Without motivation, we may lack the drive to push through challenges and pursue our goals. This can lead to procrastination, decreased productivity, and ultimately hinder personal growth and success.

On the other hand, individuals who are motivated are more likely to set specific goals, develop plans of action, and persevere in the face of difficulties. They have a positive mindset that allows them to see challenges as opportunities for growth rather than roadblocks.

Ultimately, motivation plays a vital role in personal and professional development, making it an essential aspect to cultivate in our lives. By understanding what motivates us and implementing strategies to maintain that motivation, we can unlock our full potential and achieve our aspirations.

The top 10 biggest motivation blockers and easy fixes to increase productivity

Which barrier resonates most with you?

1. Do you care too much about what others think?

Maybe this is stopping you from showing up as your true self. So ask yourself this question.

What would I think if I saw someone going for their dreams and putting themselves out there?

Maybe I wouldn’t notice/care. Or I’d say good for them and perhaps I’d think, they are brave to do that. But whatever I would be thinking, it’s going to be a reflection of my inner beliefs and not really anything to do with them or their actions.

Solution:

Letting go of what we think others will think is a huge part of allowing yourself to get started with YOUR life and boosting your own motivation to succeed.

2. Is Procrastination Holding You Back?

Procrastination is a common enemy of productivity. It sneaks in when tasks seem overwhelming or daunting, causing us to delay starting them. The good news is that you can conquer procrastination with a few simple techniques

Solution:

First, break tasks into smaller, manageable steps. This approach makes them less intimidating and helps you maintain momentum. Setting specific deadlines for each step further boosts your motivation to complete them on time.

Consider using the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working for focused intervals followed by short breaks. This method keeps you productive while preventing burnout. Reflect on how procrastination affects your daily routine and implement these small changes to keep it at bay.

3. Are you backing yourself enough?

What would you be saying to a friend you really cared about to support them in challenging situations? ‘You can totally do it, you are amazing, think about when you did that before, you are so strong, you are so good at it, don’t give up!’

Solution:

Notice the negative self-talk that may be holding you back. Replace it with positive affirmations and reminders of your past successes. By cultivating a mindset of self-belief, you'll find motivation naturally flourishing.

The next time self-doubt creeps in, remember all the times you've overcome obstacles before. Trust in your abilities and watch your motivation soar as you back yourself fully.

4. Are you comparing yourself to others?

Think back about how far YOU have come. If you have faced challenges, remember what you did to push through. If you have left a toxic environment or person, recall how you did it. If each day is feeling hard at the moment, ask yourself what motivates you to keep doing the work, focus on your unique path and progress.

Solution:

Reflect on how far you've come and the obstacles you've conquered along the way. Celebrate your achievements and acknowledge your growth. When you concentrate on your personal journey, you'll find renewed motivation to keep pushing forward.

Remember that everyone is projecting their best self. The comparisons are often unfair and unrealistic. Look inside yourself and blinker your vision to block out the noise and stay committed to your goals. Know that your progress is what truly matters

5. Limiting beliefs- are you holding to them and giving them power?

Limiting beliefs are like invisible chains that hold you back from achieving your dreams. They often manifest as thoughts like "I can't do this" or "I'm not good enough." The key is to recognise these beliefs and transform them into empowering actions.

Start by identifying your limiting beliefs. Then, reframe them into positive statements.

For example, "I can't start a business because I'm awful with figures" becomes “I can start a business if I get an accountant.“

“I could start a business because I’m going to learn more about booking keeping. “

“ I will start a business when I learn more about how to manage the finances. “

“ I am thinking about starting a business because I have strengths but I’m aware I might need help from others in different areas. “

Solution:

By shifting your mindset and taking proactive steps, you'll break free from these constraints. Turn your limiting beliefs into empowering actions and your motivation will sky rocket!

What strategies can help overcome motivation blockers?

Overcoming motivation blockers involves adopting practical strategies tailored to your specific challenges. Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps to combat procrastination, set SMART goals for clarity, and practice positive self-talk to counter negative self-perceptions. Techniques like the Pomodoro Technique and mindfulness can also enhance focus and resilience.

Can external factors influence my motivation?

Yes, external factors such as your environment, the company you keep, and societal pressures can influence motivation. Creating a supportive and distraction-free environment, surrounding yourself with positive influences, and setting personal boundaries can help maintain motivation and focus on your goals.

What mindset shifts are necessary for long-term motivation?

For long-term motivation, it's essential to adopt certain mindset shifts that can sustain your drive and support your journey toward success. Here are three key concepts that can help you maintain motivation, overcome setbacks, and achieve your goals:

  1. Growth Mindset - Mindset encourages learning from mistakes and viewing challenges as opportunities for growth
  2. Resilience - Building resilience involves developing a positive outlook and learning to manage stress effectively.
  3. Self-Compassion - By being gentle with yourself, you create a supportive environment that encourages persistence and reduces the fear of failure.

These mindset shifts not only enhance long-term motivation but also empower you to navigate life's challenges with confidence and resilience. By adopting a growth mindset, building resilience, and practising self-compassion, you can sustain your motivation, overcome obstacles, and ultimately achieve your aspirations.

Get More Motivation with Inspiring Quotes

Sometimes, all it takes is a few words to reignite your motivation. I love motivational quotes as they have the power to uplift your spirits and remind you of your potential.

You can find some fantastic ones here: https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/motivational

Why not stick one of these on your desk or kitchen cupboard? Or perhaps use it in your screensaver. The quotation that I use on my email signature and constantly refer back to is this

“The only difference between success and failure is the ability to take action.” ~ A. G Bell

This quote is one of my personal favourites. It underscores the importance of taking consistent action toward your goals. With the right mindset and motivation, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

How to track your progress and celebrate the small wins!

Are you aware of all the positive things you have already done? Focussing your mind on this, rather than perceived failures can really help to give you a boost. It's easy to overlook the small wins along the way. Celebrating these achievements is vital for maintaining motivation and building momentum.

Start by tracking your progress and acknowledging your accomplishments. I’ve designed a simple yet effective habit tracker which you can download here for free. Remember, each small step brings you closer to your ultimate destination, making the entire journey more rewarding.

Starting Journaling; the how and why

I am also a big fan of journaling and do this myself on a daily basis to remind myself of the things I am grateful for as well as the actions I am proud of myself for completing. I encourage my clients to use journaling as a way of reflecting, action planning and practising gratitude.

This helps to increase motivation and self esteem. It can be hard to know where to start with journaling though, so to help you get started, I have created a prompt sheet with carefully crafted questions you can use yourself. Get your journal prompts and free tracker here and try it today!

Through journaling, you'll gain insights into your inner world and identify patterns that may be affecting your motivation. This practice fosters self-compassion and empowers you to make intentional changes in your life.

How could motivational coaching help?

I support clients to move into their learning zone and leave the comfort zone to achieve their goals and break habits which are no longer motivating them. I also support people experiencing overwhelm and burnout to leave the panic zone and come back to their safe zone before making changes.

Learning zones show where you can increase your motivation
